WordsThe media is not doing its job. All it seems to report is the negativity, misinformation, incorrect information and sound bites from the likes of Tony Abbott, Sophie Mirabella, Scott Morrison and Joe Hockey.

Do journalists only report what is said without balancing it with facts?  Where is their investigative reporting? What’s happened to the astute questioning by reporters at door stops?

Apparently a recent poll indicates that we trust journalists of the calibre of George Negus and Laurie Oakes but not Alan Jones or Andrew Bolt.  Well that gives me some heart!

Then there’s the Australian who has openly declared that it will destroy the Greens.  How can it do that?  What kind of power does it think it has?  Who’s powerful enough to do this?

“The Australian sees itself not as a mere newspaper, but as a player in the game of national politics, calling upon the vast resources of the Murdoch empire and the millions of words it has available to it to try to make and unmake governments.” – Robert Manne, Bad News (Quarterly Essay)

Appalling behaviour from a national newspaper.  Actually I’ve just bought this edition of the Quarterly Essay to find out about the Australian’s power and influence in Australian politics.

I’ve had to look up the definition of Journalist and Reporter

Reporters are one type of journalist. They create reports or articles as a profession for broadcast or publication in mass media such asnewspaperstelevisionradiomagazinesdocumentary film, or the Internet. Reporters cultivate sources for their work, their reports can be either spoken or written, and they are often expected to report in the most objective and unbiased way to serve the public good. A columnistis a journalist who writes pieces that appear regularly in newspapers or magazines. A polemical journalist combines reportage with personal opinion.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Journalist

So there it is.  Reporters are expected to report in the most objective and unbiased way to serve the public good.  Whose public good are the Australian journalists serving?
