I just watched a talk by Hilary Charlesworth, Women and the new wave of democracies she comes up with some very pertinent solutions to why women are not involved: 1) not involved in democracy design; 2) women’s interests are bargained away; and 3) crude model of democracy used favouring stability over social justice.

Possible solutions? 1) insist women are included in democracy design; 2) sceptical about claims of culture and women’s rights; 3) change understanding of democracy from institutions to relationships.  Well worth a look.
